Subject: Explanation for card rarities   PostPosted: Sat Jan 14, 2006 8:39 pm Reply with quote

The rarity of VTES cards in the database is encoded as a series of letters that you might find difficult to understand. Here is an explanation. Please post a reply or send me a message if something remains unclear.

An entry in the card database represents a card in a specific expansion, so when several rarities are listed, separated by /, this means that the card appears with different rarities in this expansion. It may also have been printed in other expansions.

Let's start with the simplest, the cards that appear in boosters :

R: rare
U: uncommon
C: common

When a number follows R, U or C, it means that some cards appear more often than others in the boosters even though they
are from the same "rarity". Cards are printed on R, U and C sheets and boosters typically contain 1 card from the R sheet, 3 from the U sheet and 8 from the C sheet. But some cards may show several times on the same sheet. For instance a U2 cards is printed twice more often than a U1.

Some expansion sets have a fourth rarity :

V: vampire

when uncommons and vampires are printed on different sheets (of similar rarity).

Things become a little more complex with starter cards : in VTES, starters only contain "fixed" cards : there is no random in starters (they are preconstructed decks).
In the card database, cards that were included in starters have a rarity begining with letter P, followed by the acronym of the starter name, possibly followed by a number if the starter contains several copies of the card.

Here are the acronyms:

Sabbat War
B: Brujah antitribu
L: Lasombra
T: Tzimisce
V: Ventrue antitribu

Final Nights
A: Assamite
G: Giovanni
R: Ravnos
S: Followers of Set

Camarilla Edition
B: Brujah
M: Malakavian
N: Nosferatu
To: Toreador
Tr: Tremere
V: Ventrue

Anarchs
AB: Anarch Barons
AG: Anarch Gangs
G: Gangrel

Black Hand
M: Malkavian antitribu
N: Nosferatu antitribu
To: Toreador antitribu
Tr: Tremere antitribu

Kindred Most Wanted
Al: Alastors
An: Anathema
B: Baali
G: Gangrel antitribu

Legacied of Blood
A: Akunanse
G: Guruhi
I: Istarri
O: Osebo

Third Edition
B: Brujah antitribu
M: Malkavian antitribu
Tr: Tremere antitribu
Tz: Tzimisce

Lords of the Night
A: Assamite
S: Followers of Set
G: Giovanni
R: Ravnos

Keepers of Tradition
B: Brujah
M: Malkavian
T: Toreador
V: Ventrue

Example:
"Pushing the Limit" in the SW expansion has rarity "C/PB2/PL", meaning
that it appears as common in the boosters, 2 times in the Brujah antitribu starter deck, and 1 time in the Lasombra starter deck.
