General description:
When I first heard that new theme monsters would get released, I thought it would be like Crystal Beasts or Cloudian monsters. But that was before I got to see their effects. With each one boasting a different but useful effect, the Lightsworn monsters are a real threat!!
Uses:
This is a card that will obviously be played in all Lightsworn-dedicated decks. But what I want to prove is that Ehren, as well as some others like Ryko, can be used it nearly all decks, due to their game winning effects.
Strategies and game play:
With a new booster released, and if you have read about matches of the latest SJC, the pace of duels have slowed down considerably. Forgotten monsters like Gravekeeper’s spy, Treeborn frog and even Beikochi the Battlenchanted Locomotive are seen on the frontline again. Such monsters are those that are always played in defence position, so Ehren will make short work of them, blowing away these monsters back to your opponent’s deck. Who’d want a useless copy of GServant in their deck, without mentioning the old Frog!!
Have you ever wondered why people use Card Trooper even after the Troop Dup combo has been rendered useless? Well card trooper allows you to draw a card when it is destroyed, but also provide deck thinning!!! But what happens after its attack gets down again? Boom!!!
Now with Ehren, this will never happen. The latter provides deck thining but also spins off monsters, in much the same way that Raiza or PWWB did, but it’s not to the top, but nicely shuffled in so that you’ll not see them in a while!!
The only card that I know will benefit from a spin-off is Serpentine Princess, but that ugly reptillian monster was never played!!
Combos with other cards:
Despite being a Lightsworn monster, Ehren works well with other less theme-specific cards:
Enemy Controller
Haven’t you ever switched an attacking monster Jinzo to defence position with Enemy Controller? Why destroy it, it will only get reborned!! Summon an Ehren and blow it away!!!
Swords of Concealing Lights and Book of Moon
Doing pretty much the same thing, these two cards flip monster(s) face down, which will provide an ideal situation for getting rid of them.
Pickle Fairy
This ancient fossil(she's a fairy actually, but such an old card!!
) can switch monsters to defence position too!
Ways to counteract it:
Like most other monsters, Ehren, Lightsworn Monk has no evasion ability, so any monster removal will work.
Strengths/Pros:
-Sends cards rfrom the top of your deck to the graveyard, helping in deck thinning!
-Can return monster to opponent’s deck
-Effect applies BEFORE damage calculation, so attacking will never result in taking damage
-Decent attack and its low defence may keep it away from smashing ground’s range
Weaknesses/Cons:
-Sending cards from the top of the deck may eventually turn to a Deck-out…
-It’s attack points, like that of Bountiful Artemis, makes it unsearchable by Sangan or Shining Angel.
-Effect is only for defence position monsters
Variations:
This card is only available in the latest Light Of Destruction booster pack, but unluckily as a hard to get and highly coveted secret rare!!(Just like DAD and Judgement Dragon)
Artwork and aesthetics:
Well, the artwork shows a monk( a girl?!?!?!?), dressed in jazzy jewellery equipped with a quarterstaff. Not the picture I expected for a monk… but it’s all right I guess..
Overall rating:
This card gets an 8/10 from me, partly because of it’s versalinity and it’s cool effect!! Who thought that Lightsword monsters couldn’t be splashed?
Lightsworns being a new theme and all, feel free to suggest more combos please!
