I would have to say of any card in Magic that puts tokens in to play this card takes the cake. On top of being a 4/4 for 5 with Devour 2, It has a jaw dropping ability that allows it to put 1/1 saprolings in to play at the beginning of your upkeep equal to the number of +1+1 counters on it. So if you devour 3 creature you get a 10/10 that gives you six 1/1 saprolings every turn, and if you have Doubling Season in play 12 Saprolings every turn!!!!
can you say game over
I would wait until i have three 1/1 Saprolings then play him and use his devour effect on 3 of toughs saprolings to make him a 10/10 and hopefully i have ether Coat of Arms, or Doubling Season in play or Over Run in my hand. then next turn if doubling seasons in play i get 12 Saqprolings, and ether use coat of arms to make them each a 12/12 or next turn use over run to give them +3+3 with trample
(Strategies and game play)
This card can be used in many strategies weather your going for a 5 Mana cost creature that you can make huge relevantly easy or weather your going for a creature that will mass sworm your opponent in a VERY short amount of time.
(Combos with other cards)
The best 3 Cards that go with Mycoloth are by far Doubling Season, Coat of Arms, and Over Run. Doubling season will give you double the Saprolings when his effect activates "As if it wasn't good enough", Coat of Arms makes each of toughs saprolings huge to the point your opponent better have a mass destruction card or a card that destroys artifacts or they will lose. and Over Run makes all toughs little guys bigger and have trample to get a massive amount of damage through.
(Ways to counteract it)
Because he has no way to protect himself (Shroud, Indestructible, Protection) Your opponent could easily use any kill card such as Unmake, Path to Exile, or Oblivion Ring to get rid of it and cost you other creatures in the process because of his devour effect. Or they can easily just counter him.
1.Great For making MANY creatures.
2.Easy to make HUGE.
3.Can be the game finisher when used with other cards
1.Does not protect itself
2.If you devoured with it and they kill it you are out more cards.
It has only been Released in Shards of Alara as a Rare.
(Artwork and aesthetics)
I love this art, it depicts a large fungal creature on a rampage. And Raymond Swanland has done many other Art works for Magic the Gathering cards and is one of my favorite Magic Artists.
I would have to give this card a 9 out of 10. Because in the right deck its effects could be devastating to your opponent.
