General description:
One of my favourite cards and helped me achieved many victories even when I was in a pinch. At first, I add this card on my Kagero deck, while the other grade 3 are Dauntless Drive Dragon and Burning Hell Seal Dragon Blockade Inferno. Really worked out well, I haven't feel bored playing with this grade 3s in a month with over 150 matches, and made me feel like to continue using this deck. I have tried to change my grade 3, first I replace Cruel Dragon for Blast Bark Dragon, another powerful card, focus more on high power attacks and chances to break opponent's defences by surprise in one attack. But after several matches I decided to put back Cruel Dragon to my deck, replacing Blockade Inferno, because I feel comfortable playing Cruel Dragon. So I will make a review of this great card and since it is a pretty new card and not that many people use it. Why there has not many people using it if it is that good? Maybe because this card is release at the same time with grade 4 cards, and people sometimes more interested in greater grade. I'll make this review as a summary, just a glimpse of his skill and you guys can try play this card yourselves to see if this unit is real good or not, that is if u can handle this card ;p

Uses, strategies and game play:
This card has 2 purposes, which are to retire opponent's rear guard and to Superior Ride from hand if current vanguard is grade 2 or more. Very good skill, to retire rear guard during main phase and at the same time to Superior Ride from hand, means to dominate our opponents by reducing their card supply while ride ourselves a greater grade. Reaching grade 3 early than opponent is great sometimes. This card's Limit Break is to retire opponent's rear guard, grade 2 or lower, means to reduce opponent's cards and chance to seal opponent's intercepting skill, by retiring their grade 2. More details will be described in Combos, Strengths/Weaknesses and other sections.

Combos with other cards:
For Superior Ride Combos :
Gattling Claw Dragon

[ACT](RC): [Counter Blast (1) & Put this unit into your soul] If you have a 《Kagerō》 Vanguard, choose up to one of your opponent's grade 0 rear-guards, and retire it.
Only 1 counter blast, put this unit to soul, retire opponent's grade 0, and we got our Superior Ride, and more soul to later activate Limit Break also. Most effective to retire grade 0 who has skill to also Superior Ride like Kyrph or other useful skill like Wingal Brave.

Berserk Dragon

[AUTO]:[Counter Blast (2)] When this unit is placed on (VC) or (RC), if you have a ¬ęKagero¬Ľ vanguard, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose an opponent's grade 2 or less rear-guard, and retire it.
Need 2 counter blast, retire grade 2 or less rear guard, quite hard to achieve in ealier match to Superior Ride, but still useful in late match if we want Superior Break Ride on Dauntless Drive Dragon.

Seal Dragon, Corduroy

[AUTO]:[Counter Blast (1) - Cards with "Seal Dragon" in its card name] When this unit is placed on (VC) or (RC), if you have a ¬ęKagerō¬Ľ vanguard, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose one of your opponent's rear-guards, retire it, and your opponent looks at up to four cards from the top of his or her deck, searches for up to one grade 2 unit, calls it to (RC), and shuffles his or her deck.
Need 1 seal dragon counter blast, only effective if we play with seal dragon majority, but can retire any rear guard, only that give chance to opponent to Superior Call grade 2, even worse if has skill activated when placed on rear guard circle, some of them can also retire ours. Anyway, my Superior Ride Cruel Dragon has been successful mostly thanks to Corduroy.

Seal Dragon, Terricross / Terrycloth

[ACT](RC):[Counter Blast (1) - Cards with "Seal Dragon" in its card name & Put this unit into your soul] If you have a ¬ęKagero¬Ľ vanguard, choose one of your opponent's rear-guards, retire it, and your opponent looks at up to four cards from the top of his or her deck, searches for up to one grade 2 unit, calls it to (RC), and shuffles his or her deck.
Like Corduroy, as a seal dragon, but more easier to use since this unit is a grade 0. But there are other grade 0 who is more preferable than this unit, for example Dracokid or Conroe.

Demonic Dragon Mage, Kimnara

[ACT](RC):[Counter Blast (1)] & Put this unit into your soul] If you have a ¬ęKagero¬Ľ vanguard, choose up to one of your opponent's grade 1 rear-guards, and retire it.
Another easy cost to pay, but have to put Kimnara to soul, reducing our rear guard, but the good thing is to increase souls, then Cruel Dragon can activates Limit Break many more times.

Lizard Soldier, Conroe

[ACT](RC):[Counter Blast (1) & Retire this unit] Search your deck for up to one grade 1 or less ¬ęKagero¬Ľ, reveal it to your opponent, put it into your hand, and shuffle your deck.
Indirect combo, to search other cards who has retiring skills like Kimnara or even Gatling Claw Dragon. Though we use Conroe usually to search perfect guards. The sad thing is instead to soul, we have to retire him to use skill.

Prowling Dragon, Striken

[AUTO]:When another ¬ęKagerō¬Ľ rides this unit, choose one of your vanguards, and that unit get [Power]+5000/[Critical]+1 until end of turn.
Though I haven't use this card, I think this unit is very good sometimes, when we Superior Ride Cruel Dragon in early match, when opponent is likely able to guard, just give Cruel Dragon a good boost, with additional power and critical and twin drive check, then we can give a huge beating in early match.

Exile Dragon

[ACT](RC):[Retire this unit] Choose an opponent's grade 0 or less rear-guard, and retire it.

Retire grade 0, though this unit is a grade 3.

For Limit Break Combos :
Dauntless Drive Dragon

[AUTO] Limit Break 4 (This ability is active if you have four or more damage):When a ¬ęKagerō¬Ľ rides this unit, choose your vanguard, that unit gets [Power]+10000 and "[AUTO](VC):[Choose three cards from your hand, and discard them] At the end of the battle that this unit attacked, if this unit has not become [Stand] during that turn, you may pay the cost. If you do, [Stand] this unit." until end of turn.
Great card, I play Kagero solely because of this card, can make a great combo to almost all of Kagero grade 3, and of course with Cruel Dragon. Dauntless make it possible for Cruel Dragon to stand and attack again to use Limit Break to retire more rear guards. His skill will help Cruel Dragon do the finishing blow as well.

Bellicosity Dragon

[AUTO](VC/RC): When this unit's attack hits a vanguard, if you have a ¬ęKagero¬Ľ vanguard, choose a card from your damage zone, and turn it face up.

Flame Edge Dragon

[AUTO](VC/RC):When this unit's attack hits, if you have a ¬ęKagero¬Ľ vanguard, you may Soul Charge (1).
Make their attack hits then we can flip counter blast face up or soul charge, helps Cruel Dragon increase soul to activate Limit Break.

The above combos are the effective ones and suitable with Cruel Dragon's skill, while there are still many combos with other cards, but due to cards selections and capacity, below cards won't be prioritised to use, but can be consider as options as well. Here are the name list :
>> Demonic Dragon Mage Diva : put to soul if boost Cruel Dragon who has LB4 and hits vanguard, then draw a card
>> Lizard Runner, Undeux : just for soul while opponent cannot retire grade 0 to reduce soul
>> Red Pulse Dracokid : chance to find Cruel Dragon from top 5 deck
>> Demonic Dragon Berserker, Shagara : counter blast 1 to boost LB4 and add [Power]+3000
>> Dragonic Gaias : give critical but reduce 2 soul and power boost
>> Flame of Hope, Aermo : if attack hits when boosted, chance to switch card
>> Heatnail Salamander : if hits vanguard when boosted, retire opponent's grade 1 rear guard
>> Demonic Dragon Berserker, Kubanda : add power to self if VG or RG has LB4
>> Beikin Grim Dragon : call this unit before Superior Ride Cruel Dragon, will get [Power]+10000 on self
>> Chain Blast Dragon : chance to find Cruel Dragon from top 5 deck if hits vanguard
>> Dual Axe Archdragon : add power on self if opponent's rear guard is 2 or less
>> And many more or other unreleased cards..

Ways to counteract it:
Superior Call rear guards, either from hand or deck or soul or even form drop zone, to keep maintain hand cards. If possible just attack with grade 3 rear guards who have additional power. Or just try have many hand cards to both defending and call, since this unit don't have skill to add more power, even better if don't have any booster. Try to hold on when this unit's counter blasts and souls cannot be used anymore, than we can call all from hands to produce full attack in near end match. Try to hold our key cards on hand, if possible, call some other rear guard as bait to be retire, and when Cruel Dragon cannot retire anymore, either run out of counter blast or soul, then we can call our key rear guards. Without Limit Break activated, this unit is not that much of a threat. Fight fire with fire, that is to retire or put an effect to rear guards, if we can, so will reduce attack chance and drags the match so Cruel Dragon will use up all of counter blast and souls, or can't use Limit Break anymore. Try to Superior Ride also good to gain the same advantages.

Strengths/Pros:
>> Superior Ride if during our main phase retire one of opponent's rear guard. Very convenient skill to retire and then Superior Ride at the same time. Unlike usual Superior Ride which requires certain grades and cards to put into soul, this Superior Ride just requires Kagero vanguard grade 2 or higher, n during main phase retiring opponent's rear guard without decreasing our rear guard or hand more, if we have Cruel Dragon card in hand. Dominating our opponent while they still at grade 1 or catching up when their grade is higher, especially when we got grade lock in the beginning and need to catch up.

>> When Limit Break activated, whenever this unit attacks may retire one of opponent's grade 2 or less rear guards by counter blast 1 and soul blast 1, pretty fair cost. This skill can retires and at the same time reduces opponent's intercepting skills by retiring their grade 2. Some opponent's grade 0 and grade 1 has an essential skill like Beast Deity, Riot Horn, or Stealth Beast, Kuroko, or Pr{h}ism-Image, Clear who has important roles to gain advantages, so retiring them will be good for dominating the match.

>> This card becomes a real threat when attacking, and if possible, attack twice in one turn, with help from Dauntless Drive Dragon's Break Ride, will give huge advantages to chance to retire 2 opponent's potential rear guards, either grade 0, 1 or 2 for intercepting. And the good thing is, after this card rode Dauntless and attacked twice, if next turn we can ride another Dauntless and able to retire opponent's rear guard, we have a chance to ride another Cruel Dragon and attack twice again! Though the power will be deducted by -3000, but still have a huge advantages to attack twice in a turn. A real domination.

Weaknesses/Cons:
>> If focus on Superior Ride skill, then a cards who can retire rear guards are necessary in early match, like Berserk Dragon, Gatling Claw Dragon, Seal Dragon Corduroy, and sometimes to pay the cost in that earlier match can't be met, like counter blast 2 or counter blast certain card like seal dragon. Retiring rear guard to Superior Ride can be done during Main Phase, so cards like Salamanders won't help activate this skill.

>> If Superior Ride then this unit loses [Power]-3000 until end of that turn.

>> To activate Limit Break requires both counter blast 1 and soul blast 1. Kagero is not likely fond of soul charging, just a few cards who do that, so this skill is more limited to the amount of souls.

>> This unit's Limit Break cannot retire opponent's grade 3 rear guard, thus opponent can still attacking with their grade 3 in front row, even worse if they have skill to add power.

>> If opponent can Superior Call rear guards, either from hand or deck or soul, then retiring their rear guards won't be too effective if they can Superior Call them again easily.

>> No skill to add power.

Variations:
Released from Extra Booster : Divine Dragon Progression set, number EB09-002. November 22nd 2013, Japanese versions.

Artwork and aesthetics:
The image's art is good, we can see the background filled with fire and his big claws representing malice and spreading fear, very intimidating and dominating, maybe even better if he has bigger fangs too and spread his wings wide, more dominating.

Overall rating:
My rating on this card will be 8 out of 10. This card is great for retiring rear guards but not always work with opponent's who can guard well or superior call rear guards or just attacking with powerful grade 3, that's why we have to play smart to maximise this card's potential.

I got to say, that is one badass Kagero unit. You got any other units from different clans that got you to win?
