hey guys My first complete Season 2 deck was Aqua Force, Mael and Glory Mael to be exact, so you can imagine how excited I was when I heard the news.

In fact, when the Blue Storm support was released, I went hyper for a good 15 minutes, and proceeded to spend the rest of the night test playing it. Without further ado, here’s my take on this beautiful dragon.

First, let’s take a look at its skill:

[AUTO](VC) Limit Break 4 (This ability is active if you have four or more damage):[Counter Blast (1) & Choose one of your rear-guards, [Rest] it, and lock it] When this unit attacks a vanguard, if it is the fourth battle of that turn or more, you may pay the cost. If you do, until end of that battle, this unit gets [Power]+5000/[Critical]+1 and “[AUTO](VC): At the end of the battle that this unit attacked, if the attack did not hit during that battle, draw a card, choose one opponent’s rear-guards, and retire it.”.
(The locked card is turned face down, and cannot do anything. It turns face up at the end of the owner’s turn.)
[CONT](VC): If you have a card named “Blue Storm Dragon, Maelstrom” in your soul, this unit gets [Power]+2000.
[CONT](VC/RC): Lord (If you have a unit without a same clan as this unit, this unit cannot attack)

It’s a literal reverse of Blue Storm Dragon, Maelstrom’s Limit Break. Instead of retiring a rearguard and drawing one when it’s attack hits, you retire one rearguard and draw one if your attack does not hit. Along with the +5k and +1 Critical it gains, this card pressures your opponent if they are at 3-4 damage. They have two options and three possible outcomes:

-Guard and get minused
-No Guard (and live)
-No Guard (and die)

With the new Blue Storm support, I believe that it is possible to make a pure Blue Storm deck, with the exception of Paschal, the Perfect Guard. As the information was just released, I only had the time to play test 5 different decks, a pure Blue Storm deck, save the Paschals, and 4 hybrid decks.

~~~Lineup 1~~~
Blue Storm Dragon, Maelstrom x3
Blue Storm Karma Dragon, Maelstrom “Я” x3
Blue Storm Supreme Dragon, Glory Maelstrom x2
~~~Lineup 2~~~
Blue Storm Karma Dragon, Maelstrom “Я” x3
Blue Flight Dragon, Transcore Dragon x3
Water General of Wave-like Spirals, Benedict x2

~~~Lineup 3~~~
Blue Storm Karma Dragon, Maelstrom “Я” x3
Blue Wave Dragon, Tetra Drive Dragon x3
Water General of Wave-like Spirals, Benedict x2
~~~Lineup 4~~~
Blue Storm Dragon, Maelstrom x3
Blue Storm Karma Dragon, Maelstrom “Я” x3
Water General of Wave-like Spirals, Benedict x2

~~~Lineup 5~~~
Blue Storm Dragon, Maelstrom x3
Blue Storm Karma Dragon, Maelstrom “Я” x3
Storm Rider, Diamantes x2
After testing the various lineups, I found lineups 1, 4 and 5 the most consistent. After all, in a mirror match, the one with the 13k base has the advantage.
Lineups 2 and 3 were rather fun to use, as my opponents certainly did not expect me to Break Ride Mael “Я” onto Transcore, or riding Tetra over Mael “Я”. Unfortunately, I feel that the two of them work horribly together. There is simply no point in Breakriding Mael ”Я” over Transcore. The problem with Mael ”Я” and Tetra was the consistency. I could not run the Blue Storm 10k and 12k beaters in case I rode into Tetra before Mael ”Я”.
Running pure Blue Storm is not a very good idea, as they do not have any switchers or restanders (like Storm Rider, Basil or Tidal Assault), which takes the bite out of Mael “Я”. I would definitely recommend a hybid deck instead.
Running Tetra as a finisher was actually… okay. It works well as a backup Vanguard. However, I would not recommend running it though, since you are probably using the Blue Storm 10k and 12k archtype beaters.
Another point to note is that if your opponent keeps you at 3 damage, you will be unable to Limit Break, which means no pressure. This can be solved by running 2-3 damage adders in your deck. For pure Blue Storm builds (Blue Storm G2s and G3s), you may have some trouble getting your fourth attack in. I would recommend running either Basil, Diamantes, Tidal Assault or Benedict.
Maelstrom Яeverse’s main weakness would probably be decks that do not require Limit Break (there’s a lot), decks that clear the field (Kagero, Narukami) and decks that disable your units (Lock and the new Megacolony). When facing those decks, I try to keep their damage to 3 and pressure them to guard lest I Drive Check a Critical Trigger.
Just use the build that compliments your playing style. After all, you’re the one who is leading these troops (not to mention the magnificent dragons) to battle.
Benedict vs. Diamantes
VS
As you could see in lineups 4 and 5, I wanted to see which of the two was better, and in my opinion, Benedict is more beneficial to Mael “Я” players. True, Diamantes can help you hit 11k Vanguards and swap places with a backrow unit, keeping it safe from normal rearguard attacks (I doubt that many Kagero users still run Tejas), but Benedict gives you a free Lock after it restands with its skill, letting you Limit Break without diminishing your attacks. You can attack first with a swapper, then a rearguard, followed by Benedict. Then, stand Benedict and Lock it when Mael “Я” attacks to activate its Limit Break.
In conclusion, Maelstrom “Я” is definitely one of the best pressure units to date, with a strong support to boot. Although it may not be as good a finisher as DOTR, it is definitely very consistent in offence (subject to the build of the deck), the pressure of its Limit Break alone is more than enough to win games.
