Does Pupitar's Poké-BODY Energy Protection apply only to attaching basic energy cards or do special energy cards count too?

pupitar's body works with either, so if you put a double colorless you get -20 damage reduction (despite being only 1 energy card), that can spare him from tyrant's darkness howl, about same tactic (with special metal energy) i use to meta gross
