I already did one Obelisk review a while ago, and now that there is more support I wanted to do an updated version.
So since Slifer the Sky Dragon has finally come out I have decided to do a write up on the 3 most powerful cards in the anime. Let’s see how they match up in real world. I chose Obelisk first since he was the first one that came out. Then I will review Ra, and finally Slifer.
Let’s start with his summoning. Obelisk can only be normal summoned by tributing 3 monsters on your side of the field. Some people might not like that, but I believe that the payoff is well worth it, and let’s be honest. In today’s game it’s not hard at all to have your entire field full with monsters with all the special summoning and Synchro, and XYZ monsters. His other effect is that he can be special summoned for one turn, but then he goes to the graveyard. That is great in my opinion. We have a ton of these monsters that are super powerful, but once they leave the field, they are done. Obelisk is different when it comes to that.
His other effect states that he cannot be targeted by any card effects. So that means that not only can he not be targeted by cards that destroy a monster. He also cannot be targeted by any removal cards, or anything else like that. This gives him a lot of protection, but it still might only keep him on the field for a turn or two before your opponent uses something like Mirror force to get rid of Obelisk since it does not target. Well there is a way around that. Use hardened armed dragon to tribute summon Obelisk. When HAD is used for a tribute summon that monster becomes invincible. It cannot be destroyed by any card effects. So now you would have a monster that cannot be destroyed by any card effects at all, and that same monster cannot be targeted by any card effects as well. So can’t be destroyed, and it can’t be targeted. This will make sure to keep Obelisk on the field for a while. Just watch out for Obelisk’s boogeyman, Trishula, Dragon of the Ice barrier.
Another card you can use if you dont have HAD is the new card that came out in cosmo blazar. March of the Monarch. It is a spell card that makes your god cards immune to targeting effects, and none of them can be destroyed by any card effects at all. Gives us some more support for the god cards.
His next effect states that you can tribute two monsters on your side of the field and destroy all of your opponents monsters, but if you use this effect then this monster can’t attack. I don’t really use this effect that much at all to be honest. I only use it if my opponent has swarmed the field with monsters and I really want to get rid of them. At least you can tribute a monster, and Obelisk for this effect and then have one of your other monsters attack your opponent directly, but if I spent so much on getting Obelisk out on the field, then I want him to stay on the field.
His next effect states that his normal summoning cannot be negated, and card effect cannot be activated when he is summoned. That is great because it makes sure that Obelisk will be getting summoned on the field. I like this effect a lot.
The final thing about Obelisk it that he has an amazing 4000 attack and 4000 defense. That is what I love about him the most. I have played this game since it first came out. Since the first episode so I kind of love OTK and monsters with huge attack power. What I love doing with Obelisk is combining him with Megamorph which would make his attack 8000, and then activating Fairy meteor crush. Here is the effect of Fairy meteor crush for those who don’t know.
“When the equipped monster attacks a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the equipped monster's ATK, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent”.
So now imagine this. You have Obelisk the tormentor with the effect of Hardened armed dragon in play which makes him almost unstoppable, and then you power him up to 8000, or 16000 if you had two Megamorphs, and finally you activate fairy meteor crush to crush and wipe out your opponents life points.
So this might seem like a big minus for some people because you are investing a lot of cards for just one monster, but this is talking about an Obelisk deck where the goal is to summon him with HAD, and win the game as fast as you can with cards like Megamorph, and fairy meteor crush, or whatever else you can come up with.
Now let me talk about his weaknesses. Well for one, you must tribute 3 monsters for him. I don’t think it’s hard, but a lot of people are put off by his effect. The second is that he cannot be targeted, but he can still be destroyed by a few other cards out there. The third is Trishula, since he effect does not target. I know what you are thinking, I thought it targets as well, but I guess that the guys who made this card wanted to mess with us for some reason. Another card that can get rid of him is Lava Golem because its tributes summoned by using two of the opponents monsters.
And finally, the artwork. I love the artwork. I see a lot of people say that he doesn’t look good, but honestly, I want to know what they are smoking. He looks amazing in my opinion. The details are great, and he really looks like a demon you don’t want to mess with, EVER.
Overall it’s a great card in my opinion, especially when you put him in his own deck. Then this bad boy gets a chance to shine.
