5 bucks if you read this review all the way lol.
This is probably the most powerful card of all time in the anime. I still remember when I first saw him. I fell in love right away with how powerful and beautiful this dragon looked like. He had like 5 different effects, and could only be summoned by specific people. That is why it is such a shame that they have nerfed Ra so badly.
Winged dragon of Ra takes 3 monsters to be normal summoned. I already said in my Obelisk review that itís not too hard to swarm the field with monsters and summon this monster. There is only one problem. This monster is not worth it. Obelisk was worth it, but Ra isnít. Just run Obelisk, unless you are going to use some of the cards that I mention in this review.
The next thing about this card is that it canít be special summoned. Obelisk can be special summoned, and has some protection. Slifer has no protection, but it can be special summoned for a turn just like Obelisk. Ra on the other hand canít. The funny thing is that this monster was always special summoned in the anime from the graveyard. I donít think it was ever summoned successfully on the field without going to the graveyard first. I might be wrong, but I just canít remember right now.
His next deal is that he has no atk/def. Now in the anime, Ra gains the atk/def of the monsters used to tribute summon him. That was his main effect, but in the real world he got that effect stripped from him for some reason. There is only one way to have him gain atk/def now, and I really think it *censored: not good*.
In the anime you could pay ANY amount of life points to increase Ra's by the same amount. In the real world though when this card is summoned you can give up all of your LP except a 100 to have this card gain atk/def equal to the amount paid. If you use this effect, then Ra cannot use his other effect. If you want to use the other effect, well then you are stuck with a 3 tribute monster that has 0/0, and it can destroy one monster each turn by paying 1000 LP. Anyways, letís talk about his first effect some more. I really donít like that you have to give up all of your LP other than a 100 for a monster that has no protection and can be destroyed in a turn or two.
The final thing is that I hate his artwork. His name is Winged DRAGON of Ra, so why does he look like a freaking chicken? People praise his artwork, and say that he looks better than the original. Well to me the original looks godly, and like a real dragon. The new Ra looks more like a metal chicken. He even lost his tail, and it got replaced with a bird tail.
Now that we are donít with the hate, letís talk about the good stuff about this card, and some combos.
This card has potential to get huge if you summon him early enough. You can easily have a monster that has over 5000 atk/def if you summon him at the right time.
You can use healing wave generator. It is a card that allows you to raise your LP once a turn by picking one monster, and raising your LP by that monsters level, times 100. So that means that you can summon Ra, and give up your entire LP to get a huge powerhouse, and then you use HWG to raise your LP by 1000. After that you use Ra's effect to destroy a monster on the field by paying 1000 LP. Then hopefully the field will be cleared enough for a direct atk by Ra and win the game.
You can also do the same thing that I said about Obelisk the Tormentor. Use Hardened Armed Dragon to summon Ra, and you will have a monster that cannot be destroyed by card effects. If he is big enough, then this will buy you enough time to hopefully win the game, especially when it is combined with Healing Wave Generator.
If you donít have Hardened Armed Dragon, you can always use Prime Material Dragon to protect Ra from card effects. He isnít that expensive right now, and is a very useful card.
The final way to use Ra is actually in a psychic deck. You might be surprised right now, but there is a pretty good way. After you summon RA, use DNA surgery to change his type into a psychic instead of Divine beast. Then use Telekinetic Charging Cell to use his second effect where he destroys a monster on the field for free.
